Amy Tan is very interesting. She explains her troubles in life. Even though, her mother had very broken English, she didn't let that stop her from being successful in life. She goes forth with explaining the humiliation she felt towards her moms english. However, she still respected her mother.
She did a wonderful thing by writing a book for her mother to understand. Many Chinese-Americans can relate to Amy's mother. This book would be very beneficial to them.

The Tale of Two Stories
"The Lottery" and "The Storm" are completely different but yet still similar. Both stories are about hurt and anguish. There is tragedy in both stories. The Lottery, ended differently than what I thought it would have. I was really intrigued by this story. The Storm was interesting, but not something I would prefer to read. This was a love story. She let her feeling for an ex-lover get in the way of reality.
The outcome of either story, just like any story could have been different. I would much rather have liked a happy ending for both stories. These stories show emotion.
The Truth Beneath
Alice Walker went through many phases as a child. She was the cute little girl who wanted to go everywhere with daddy all the way until she became a tomboy. She enjoyed being outdoors and playing with her brothers. Her life dramatically changed when her brother shot her in the eye with a BB. She became very self-conscious. Alice never looked up for fear of someone seeing her eye.
After she had the tissue removed, she was a completely different person. She finally had confidence. Alice then got a boyfriend and moved on with what happened. Even with the struggles she had growing up, Alice became an author. She shows that beauty is more than skin deep.

Violence In Our Youth
A current issue our community is facing, is the rise of violence among the youth. The violence is anything from verbal abuse to fighting to murder. Violence amoung our youth has been on a rise lately. Reading the paper and watching the news is very depressing.
Whithin a week our community lost three teenagers. Not all three tragedies may have been purposly performed. However, one act may have lead into a violent act. I don't believe the children in our community have enough guidance and support. Our community needs to look for a way to keep these kids occupied. A way to keep them off the streets. I think our schools should have counselors that interact with our kids more in depth. These counselors, would then be able to point out odd behavior or any signs of a troubled child, and offer guidance. I believe this would help tremendously in our community.

A New Way Of Life
The reading, The Struggle To Be An All American Girl, is an informative reading. It is directed towards the Chinese-American race. It describes the daily routine of Elizabeth and her brother. in the reading Elizabeth explains how her family wanted her to learn the Chinese culture. Her family believed it was very important for her to know her culture and the chinese language.
Elizabeth's reading is very descriptive using all sensory details. She explains the sight of the school, the smell in the classroom, and the sound of her grandmothers voice. I think it's very impressive how eager Elizabeth is to be an all american girl. She works hard to learn both cultures. At the end of the reading, Elizabeth expresses her gratitude for being able to leave the Chinese school. She feels as if she can relate to multiple cultures.
A Change In Health Care
Obama Care focuses on health care funding, increasing coverage, and reducing cost. It describes all the changes associated with "Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act." A benefit of Obama Care is inusrance companies cannot end or refuse to renew coverage, immunization and preventative care will be covered. A negative aspect is not everyone will be able to afford insurance.
I'm for Obama Care. The positives outway the negatives. It may be hard for those who can't afford the expense of health care. However, in the end it's cheaper than paying a full hospital bill. many people will still be able to get the health care assistance that they need. There are still charities that help people pay for medical bills if they are financially unable to.
A Coverage of Background
Cofers purpose is to inform everyone of the stereotype Latin American woman are placed in. This type of disrespect should not be tolerated. She explains different occasions of when she was disrespected growing up. This doesn't happen only during certain ages. She received this kind of treatment from at a young age and into adult hood. Coffer explained her cultural back ground. Giving everyone a better understanding of why they dress and act the way they do.
I am not for stereotypes, though we all do it. I have seen where different races are treated differently. Some examples I've heard are; African Americas are violent, Mexicans are illegal, and white people are lazy. This isn't true. These statements show how ignorant some people are.
All of us have experienced this first hand. My husband is hispanic. Last year my husband and I joined in on the Black Friday excitement. After checking out, we were walking towards the doors. About to walk out of the store a Walmart worker stops my husband and asks for his receipt. Thhis stop is suppose to happen to everyone as they leave the store. The only thing in my husbands hands was our receipt and a baby doll that was in a box. He showed the worker the receipt, and proceeded to leave. As i looked around I had noticed that the walmart worker had only been stopping hispanics. I was very disgusted by what I had seen. It's very sad that this type of stuff happens on a daily basis.
